Confidence. Creativity. Can-do Attitude:

The Benefits of Music Education

Music is an art form, and a deep, important, exciting, and rewarding part of human life, and therefore a worthy endeavor all in itself.

But in addition, music education can have a range of benefits for children, both in terms of their academic performance and their personal development. Here are some reasons why music education is good for children:

Improves cognitive skills: Studies have shown that music education can improve cognitive skills like memory, attention, and processing speed. Learning to play an instrument or read sheet music requires a lot of mental effort, which can strengthen the brain and improve academic performance in other subjects.

Boosts creativity: Music education can also help children to develop their creativity and self-expression. Learning to play an instrument or compose music encourages experimentation and can provide an outlet for emotions and ideas.

Enhances social skills: Music education often involves group or ensemble work, which can help children to develop important social skills like communication, cooperation, and teamwork. Children who participate in music education may also feel a sense of belonging and camaraderie with their peers.

Builds confidence: As children improve their musical skills, they may feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in their abilities. This can help to build confidence and self-esteem, which can have positive effects in other areas of their lives.

Teaches discipline and perseverance: Learning to play an instrument or sing requires a lot of practice and dedication. Music education can help children to develop discipline and perseverance, which can be applied to other areas of their lives.

Overall, music education can have a range of benefits for children, both in terms of their academic and personal development. It can improve cognitive skills, boost creativity, enhance social skills, build confidence, and teach discipline and perseverance.

Student of the Month

Devyn Parag

Devyn has been taking piano lessons since he was six years old. He started with Dr. Dennis after some time with a previous teacher and began performing regularly in recitals, including an MTAC Community Recital on the stage at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. Devyn is now over halfway through Book 3, and will soon be learning Clementi Sonatinas and Bach’s Inventions. Devyn also studies music theory at a fairly advanced level and knows how to identify and build various types of 7th chords in different keys and inversions.

Devyn appreciates that he has no homework at his school! He enjoyed his visit with his family to Hawaii, and he also loves mechanical things, such as driving RC cars, building Legos and robots.

Teacher Spotlight

Nicole Glasser

I was introduced to music at a young age, first learning to play piano and alto saxophone. Seeing the musical “Annie” on Broadway inspired me to sing, and I performed my very first solo at my elementary school talent show in 4th grade. I later earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana. Following college, I sang in a Chicago-based indie rock band, at open mics, weddings, and with the 4th Presbyterian Vespers choir located on the Magnificent Mile. The highlight of my performing career, however, was singing the National Anthem at Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park. What a thrill!

After moving to California in 2002, I began working with Older Adults, teaching music arts classes to senior citizens throughout Orange County. I continue to perform, singing solos in church, and practicing with a cover band in the area. We haven’t settled on a band name yet, but we’re excited to work up a couple of sets and start playing out soon! I love to dabble in songwriting and recently completed coursework at Saddleback College earning an Occupational Skills Award for Music Production, so that I could learn how to produce my own music. I love to sing anything from Bach, to the Beatles, to Beyonce, and believe in the healing power of music, whether through singing, playing an instrument, songwriting, or simply listening to a favorite song. When I’m not busy making music I enjoy reading, swimming, going to the gym, dancing in my kitchen, spending time in nature, and hanging with my 2 awesome daughters, ages 13 and 17, who make me laugh every day.

Days & Deeds of Dr. Dennis

We lived for a few years in one of the many beautiful parts of Mission Viejo, near La Paz and Olympiad. My son and daughter played baseball in Rancho Mission Viejo Little League, and soccer in AYSO, and my daughter played softball with Mission Viejo Girls Softball. My children attended La Paz Intermediate School and Mission Viejo High School. My daughter participated in Irish Dance at the Butler-Fearon-O’Conner school when they were in Mission Viejo, and my son swam and dove with the Nadadores Swim School.

We spent a lot of productive and relaxing time at the Mission Viejo Library, and I even earned a scholarship from the Friends of the Library when I was going back to school at Saddleback College. We always enjoyed the hot chocolate and visit to Santa Claus at the well-decorated four corners location and then the civic center location during the holiday season, and concerts in the park at the Norman P. Murray Community Center in the summer.
